What an AI agent on WhatsApp actually changes
For a lot of businesses WhatsApp is not a support channel. It is the storefront, the order form and the receipt. Putting an agent there is a different job from putting one on a website.
The website-chatbot conversation assumes the customer is on your website. In plenty of markets that assumption is simply wrong. The customer saw a product on Instagram, screenshotted it, and sent it to your WhatsApp number at half past ten at night. Nobody is going to reply until morning, and by then they have bought it somewhere else.
The three questions that actually arrive
Look at a week of your WhatsApp messages and they cluster hard. Is this available. How much with delivery. Where is my order. All three are answerable from data you already have, and all three are lost sales when they wait eight hours.
That is why a catalogue matters more than a script here. An agent that can only recite your FAQ cannot answer the first two. An agent with your live product data behind it answers them in seconds and can take the order in the same thread.
One agent, not a second bot
The common mistake is building a separate WhatsApp bot with its own flows and its own copy. Six weeks later your website says one thing and WhatsApp says another, and nobody notices until a customer quotes the wrong price back at you.
Train one agent on your content and connect it to the channels. When you change a policy page, every channel updates, because there is only one thing to update.
Know when to get out of the way
WhatsApp conversations are more personal than website chat, and people notice a bot that will not admit it is stuck. Set the escalation threshold lower than you would on the website: when the agent is unsure, it should hand over with the full thread attached rather than trying a third rephrasing.
What to measure
Not "messages answered". Measure how many conversations reached an outcome such as an order, a booking or a resolved question, without a person, and how quickly the ones that did need a person got one. A channel that answers instantly and escalates badly is worse than one that is slow and honest.
